Pod systems and vape technology explained
A pod system is a rechargeable electronic nicotine delivery system built around two parts: a battery unit and a detachable pod holding the e-liquid and coil. This guide explains each component, the terminology, and how pod devices differ from single-use disposables.
What ENDS means
ENDS stands for Electronic Nicotine Delivery System — the regulatory umbrella term for any battery-powered device that aerosolises a nicotine-containing liquid. Vape pens, pod kits, box mods and disposables all fall under it. Indian regulation uses this category language rather than brand or format names.
The components
A pod device has five functional parts:
- Battery: a rechargeable lithium-ion cell, usually 350–1500 mAh, with charge and discharge protection circuitry
- Atomizer: the assembly that turns liquid into aerosol, comprising coil, wick and chamber
- Coil: a resistance wire or mesh strip, rated in ohms; lower resistance draws more power and produces more vapour
- Wick: cotton or fibre that pulls liquid from the reservoir onto the coil at a steady rate
- Airflow path: the channel that mixes air with vapour and sets the draw tightness
Coil resistance and why it matters
Resistance is printed in ohms. A higher-resistance coil (roughly 1.0Ω and above) suits a tight mouth-to-lung draw and higher nicotine strengths. A lower-resistance coil (below about 0.8Ω) pulls more power, produces more vapour, and pairs with lower nicotine strength. Running a coil above its rated wattage burns the wick and produces the acrid taste people call a dry hit.
Open vs closed pods
A closed pod is sealed and pre-filled, and is replaced whole. An open pod is refillable, so it costs less per millilitre and gives flavour choice, but it requires the user to manage filling, priming and coil life. Closed pods are simpler; open pods produce less waste.
Pod system vs disposable
Disposables win on zero setup and no maintenance. Pod systems win on running cost, waste, and control over airflow and strength. A pod battery lasts hundreds of charge cycles, so a single device replaces many disposables over its life.
Battery safety
Lithium cells fail when they are physically damaged, over-heated, or charged with an unsuitable supply. Practical rules: use the cable and charger rated for the device, never charge unattended or overnight, stop using a device with a swollen or dented battery, never carry loose cells with keys or coins, and keep devices out of direct heat such as a parked car.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a pod system and a disposable vape?
A pod system has a rechargeable battery and a replaceable or refillable pod, so it lasts for hundreds of cycles. A disposable is a sealed single-use device that is discarded when the liquid or battery runs out.
What does coil resistance in ohms mean?
Resistance sets how much power the coil draws. Higher resistance suits a tight mouth-to-lung draw and higher nicotine strengths; lower resistance produces more vapour and pairs with lower strengths.
What is an atomizer?
The atomizer is the assembly that converts liquid into aerosol — the coil, the wick that feeds it and the chamber around them.
Is it safe to charge a vape overnight?
No. Lithium-ion cells should be charged while someone is present and on a charger rated for the device. Unattended and overnight charging is the most common cause of vape battery incidents.
